Certification: Purpose

At the end of an Adjudicator Orientation Workshop each participant should be able to:

  • Describe the philosophy of participation of the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association.
  • Describe and demonstrate the qualities expected of a WHSFA Adjudicator.
  • Identify the characteristics of high school students evaluated at WHSFA events.
  • Understand WHSFA General Rules and Procedures.
  • Use the rules for each WHSFA category appropriately in evaluations provided to students participating in WHSFA events.
  • Write an evaluation which is kind, constructive and instructive for each student evaluated at a WHSFA event.

Your attendance at WHSFA Adjudicator Orientation Workshops is a positive indication of your wish to become the most effective person you can be in fulfilling the educational goals of the Association. To help you in this process, the following ideas are offered in an effort to make your time the most profitable possible for you and your students.

The initial fee for certification (which covers the four-hour training session and cost of materials) is $35

How to Get More Out of Workshops

  • Set goals.
Develop a list of three to six overall goals. It will start you thinking properly.
  • Develop an action plan.
Make a list of anything you want to consider doing differently when you get back on the job. This will take the fuzziness out of your thinking and give you tangible benefits.
  • Participate!
Ask questions. Make contributions. Comment. Be visible. You'll benefit two ways. First, your mind will almost magically start working on information, problems and solutions. Second, the speakers and attendees will also contribute to finding answers for you. (Don't overdo it. Be relevant and don't monopolize.)
  • Take clear and detailed notes.
Not only will this be helpful for future reference, but the very act of taking good notes and organizing your thoughts will keep you more involved. Do them right the first time. Forget about rewriting them when you get back. You'll never do it!
  • Enjoy yourself.
You can learn more when you're having a good time!
You are responsible for at least fifty percent of what you get out of any book, relationship. . . or workshop!
